Firelight by Sophie Jordan

Sophie Jordan, also known as Sharie Kohler, wrote this Mount Everest sized cliffhanger of a book. Firelight confused me, but not in the ways you may think. The plot line is is very secure and easy to understand. The characters, especially Will and Jacinda, are very well written. What confused me was the seriousness of the book. Reading the book in my head it seemed so intense, so filled with passion and fear, like something exciting lurked on every page. Then, I had it read a loud to me and it sounded silly. I think the fact that the sentences are so short makes it a hard book to read aloud-- among other things. Take this line for instance; is this supposed to be serious? : "I'm fighting with my locker again, the steel lock a cold kiss on my fingers. (It might just be me but I've never related my lock to feeing like it was kissing me...) Bodies bump and rush past me. (period)(Yup that's highschool for ya!) Strangely, my eyes burn. (period) (Bad allergies, Jacinda?) Tears want to spill. (period)(Oh, that's why her eyes were bruning. I was about to recommend Nasonex)Which is stupid. (period) Just because I can't get my locker open is no reason to wimp out. But it's more than that. (Period) I know that. (period) It's everything. (period)(Dun dun dun)" (Jordan 66). HAVE YOU EVER HEAD OF A SEMI-COLON SOPHIE JORDAN?! That, folks, was the entry to chapter seven and if I was a little more critical -- and not so in love with Will -- I would have chucked the book out of the window right there. It just seems so dry when you take it all apart. But like I said, In my head it sounded a lot better.

So, i am torn. If a sequal did come out, like the "end" of the book suggests, I might hesitate on purchacing it... (There is a sequal, its called Vanish-- Septeember 6 2011).

I give Firelight a big fat ?/5
